After Us, the Flood competes at a prestigious film festival in Nigeria
The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) has selected Arto Halonen’s film After Us, the Flood as part of its international competition.
AFRIFF is considered one of the most significant film festivals on the African continent. Each year, over 3,500 films apply, but only a small number are selected for the festival. The event takes place in Lagos, Nigeria, from November 1–8.
This year, only three feature films are included in the international competition. After Us, the Flood competes in the feature film category as the only European entry. The other two films are Pasa Faho (Australia), directed by Kalu Oji, and The Answer to Forever (China), directed by Zheng Yunchang.
AFRIFF is now being organized for the 13th time, and its program consists of feature dramas, documentaries, and short films. The festival’s aim is to showcase African filmmaking expertise and the continent’s emerging talents.
Since 2010, hundreds of films presented at the festival have gained international recognition. AFRIFF has gradually established itself as Africa’s most vibrant film festival experience, complete with workshops and award galas.
After Us, the Flood is a compelling drama that travels through time to explore relationships, identity, greed and the reasons why humans haven't yet been able to stop climate change.
After Us, the Flood has quickly become a favorite at prestigious international festivals and it has won several awards. The film received the Silver Méliès Grand Prize at the Trieste Science+Fiction Film Festival in Italy, which also earned it a nomination for the best European fantasy film among six other films. Additionally, it won Best Feature Film awards at Norway’s Ravenheart International Film Festival and Croatia’s Avant-Garde Horror & Fantasy Film Festival, as well as the Best Director award at France’s The Fantasy Film Festival.
The film stars Elias Westerberg, Linnea Leino, Tuomas Nilsson, Kasperi Kola, Petteri Summanen, Antti Reini, Pihla Penttinen, Jari Salmi, Tobias Zilliacus, Jemina Sillanpää, Robert Enckell, Hannu-Pekka Björkman, and Paavo Westerberg.
The creative team includes cinematographer Pini Hellstedt, editor Armands Začs, production designer Teppo Järvinen, sound designer Jevgenijs Kobzevs, composer Jēkabs Nīmanis, costume designer Jaana Aro, and makeup designer Maija Gundare. The film is produced by Arto Halonen, with Aija Bērziņa from Latvia serving as international co-producer.
